DJI has introduced a significant shift in how robot vacuums handle household data with the launch of its ROMO 2 range, unveiled at IFA 2026. The company is positioning privacy as a core feature alongside advanced cleaning capabilities, addressing growing concerns among homeowners about cameras and microphones inside their living spaces.
What Happened: DJI’s Privacy First Approach
The new ROMO 2 line includes two models: the ROMO P2 and ROMO A2. Both devices maintain the translucent design aesthetic from DJI’s original ROMO launched in 2025, but they introduce a meaningful addition called Local Data Mode. This feature is scheduled to arrive during the fourth quarter of 2026 and fundamentally changes how the vacuum handles recorded footage.
When Local Data Mode is active, the DJI Home app disconnects from the internet entirely. This means any photos or videos captured by the vacuum’s cameras stay on your device and never travel to external servers. Users also gain the ability to disable the robot’s cameras and microphone whenever desired, and DJI allows owners to request deletion of personal data stored by the company.
The privacy emphasis comes at a time when DJI faces increased regulatory scrutiny in the United States regarding data practices across its product lineup. Whether these new privacy protections influence regulatory decisions remains uncertain, but the company is clearly signaling that it takes user concerns seriously.
Cleaning Performance Gets a Major Upgrade Too

Beyond privacy features, the ROMO 2 delivers substantial improvements in cleaning power and obstacle navigation. DJI rebuilt its perception system from the ground up, applying technology developed for its drones to create what the company claims is millimeter-level awareness of floor-level obstacles.
This enhanced detection helps the vacuum recognize challenging items like electrical cables, glass surfaces, and mirrors, allowing it to adjust both suction strength and cleaning technique accordingly. A built-in light illuminates dark areas to help spot dirt and potential hazards during cleaning sessions.
The mopping system features a LiDAR-guided arm with a 123-degree swing range, enabling it to reach underneath sofas and cabinets with greater coverage than traditional models. The vacuum generates up to 36,000 Pa of suction and uses a pressure plate that creates a floor seal for more effective cleaning. Like some premium top-rated robot vacuums for hands-free floor care, the ROMO 2 can climb over ledges up to 8.5 centimeters high, making it suitable for homes with slight elevation changes between rooms.
What This Means for Shoppers
The ROMO 2 launch reflects an important shift in the robot vacuum market. As these devices become more sophisticated with cameras and microphones, manufacturers are recognizing that buyers want assurance their private home footage remains private. For consumers uncomfortable with data being continuously uploaded to cloud servers, the Local Data Mode option addresses a genuine concern.
European pricing has been announced, with the ROMO P2 starting at 1,299 euros and the ROMO A2 at 1,199 euros. Both will be available for order through DJI and selected retailers beginning in September. US pricing and availability have not yet been confirmed.
Shoppers in the market for a premium robot vacuum should consider what matters most to them. If cleaning power and obstacle avoidance are priorities, the ROMO 2 offers genuine improvements over previous generations. If privacy is your primary concern, the Local Data Mode feature sets a notable precedent in the robot vacuum category. For those researching options, comparing the ROMO 2 to competitors like Roomba’s new cleaning robots with self-cleaning docks or Roborock’s mop-removal technology can help clarify which vacuum best suits your home and values.
The most compelling aspect of the ROMO 2 may not be how much suction it generates or how effectively it navigates obstacles. Instead, it could be the simple ability to keep your family’s daily activities, captured through a robot’s camera lens, from leaving your home. For privacy conscious households, that peace of mind might be just as valuable as premium cleaning performance.
