How Do I Prevent Tearout When Routing Across Wood Grain?

Tearout occurs when the bit exits the workpiece and catches unsupported wood fibers. To minimize it, always climb-cut (move the router in the opposite direction of normal travel) for a light first pass to score the edge, then complete the full-depth pass in the standard direction. Using a sharp bit, reducing your feed rate, and taking shallower passes in multiple stages all help significantly. A backer board clamped behind the exit point also supports the fibers and dramatically reduces tearout on crossgrain cuts. Sharp bits are as important as motor power for clean results.
