At minimum, pick up a set of rubber leg caps or caster covers to protect finished floors, a scaffold-rated personal fall arrest system if you will be working above ten feet outdoors, and outriggers if your model supports them for added stability at maximum height. A simple hook or clip system to hang a paint bucket from the guardrail is a low-cost addition that makes painting work noticeably more efficient. Beyond the scaffold itself, having chalk reels on hand is useful for snapping level reference lines at elevation before you start cutting or fastening.
Can one person set up and use scaffolding alone?
Most compact and mid-size residential scaffolds are designed for solo assembly and use. Units in the 30-to-50-pound range are manageable for one person to carry, unfold, and configure without assistance. Larger baker-style towers with steel frames can exceed 80 pounds, making solo assembly difficult and tiring. Always read the manufacturer’s assembly instructions, some larger models specifically recommend two-person assembly. For solo indoor projects, prioritize lighter aluminum or alloy-steel frames with fold-flat designs over heavy multi-section steel towers.
